Topic 72: मैं अपना काम करने गया I went to do my work

Context: Tara tells Rita she plans to go to India to attend a wedding.

Tara talking to Rita

Tara - Rita, I am going to India to see my friends wedding.

Rita - That is good, I went to India last year to celebrate my nephew's wedding.

Tara - Why not come to India this time with me and we can both go travelling.

Rita - Yes, and I think that at that time I can go and meet my relatives.

Tara - There is one more thing that the wedding is at the time of my school holidays.

Rita - Good, but I don't know if I can get leave from work at that time.

Notes: oblique infinitive plus verb of motion

A common way to speak of actions in the past, present or future, uses an oblique infinitive followed by a verb of motion. Verbs of motion include आना come, जाना go, घूमना wander, सैर करना stroll. Note that another word can come between the oblique infinitive and the finite verb.

Notes: अपना ‘my own’, ‘your own’, ‘our own’, etc.

In sentences where the subject of the sentence also possesses something the possessive pronoun is replaced by अपना, i.e. never say ‘मैं मेरा’ say मैं अपना. अपना depending on the subject it refers back means: my, your, her, etc.. The ending of अपना behaves like the adjective काला. Note: In commands the subject is always you, so अपना will mean your. The word अपना also carries the sense of my very own, your very own etc. If the subject and a dependent subject are separated by और do not use अपना.
