Topic 69: मैंने काम किया (irregular perfective verbs)

Context: As Tara walks across the road to her house she meets Rita and Tim.


तारा - अरे रीता! तुम लोग कहाँ से आई हो ?

रीता - हम नई फ़िल्म ‘बॉबी जासूस’ देखकर सिनेमा से आए।

टिम - बहुत बढ़िया फ़िल्म थी, एक दम मज़ेदार। क्या तुमने भी उस फ़िल्म को देखा?

तारा - मैंने उसके बारे में समीक्षा पढ़ी। शायद मैं कल देखूँ।

रीता - ठीक, और आज तुमने क्या किया ?

तारा - मैंने पढ़ाई की और उसके बाद सलीम और मार्क के साथ हमने खाना खाया।


Tara - Hey Rita! Where have you folks come from?

Rita - We have come from seeing the new film ‘Bobby Jasoos’.

Tara - It was a very excellent film, totally fun. Have you also see that film?

Tim - I have read a review of it. Perhaps I may see it tomorrow.

Rita - Okay, and what did you do today?

Tara - I studied and after that we ate food with Salim and Mark.

In Hindi some common perfective verbs are irregular. For instance:

It is particularly important to note the forms करना to do takes in the perfective as it is so common. For instance, with the common verb बंद करना to close:

In regards to spelling note that some verbs are irregular.

Stems ending in – ई, the - ई changes to - इ before masculine perfective endings. 

Note some speakers prefer सिलाई करना ‘doing sewing’. उसने रजाई सी। might also be said उसने रजाई की सिलाई की। He stitched the quilt.

Stems ending in –ऊ, the -ऊ changes to -उ before perfective endings.
