Topic 68: मैंने दाल खाई I ate dal (Perfective: transitive verbs)

Context: Salim chats on his phone with his friend Munni.

Salim - Munni, how are you? What did you do today?

Munni - Everything is good, I read the paper and a book. What did you do today?

Salim - I went to the Kohinur restaurant with Mark and Tara.

Munni - Did you eat any special food today?

Salim - No it was ordinary food, I ate dal-roti-chicken. Did you make food today?

Munni - Yes, I made chicken biryani and samosas. Did you see Ali?

Salim - No, I did not see him, but I saw your girlfriend Tara.

Munni - I just finished work on my studies, perhaps I may go and see them tomorrow.

Notes: Perfective with transitive verbs

In the perfective with transitive verbs the subject is followed by the postposition ने and the verb agrees with the object where possible.

But, with a postposition after the object the verb stays masculine singular.

Note that when you say look at somebody you have to use को as in:

The verb also remains in the masculine singular form if there is no object.

You also need to remember the forms the personal pronouns take before ने.

+ ने
मैं मैंने I
तू तूने you
यह इसने he, she, it
वह उसने he, she, it
कौन किसने who
हम हमने we
तुम तुमने you
आप आपने you
ये इन्होंने they, etc.
वे उन्होंने they, etc.
कौन किन्होंने who?
Note that, as ever, ये and वे are both they and honorific plurals for he and she. Due to the frequency with which people talk about what people say you often here, उन्होंने कहा कि....  S/he said that....
