I will have to go

Context: Tim and Rita carry on talking about what they should do.

Tim talking to Rita

Rita - Alright, so now you will have to tell me what do you have to buy?

Tim - Do you remember that next month when we are in India whose birthday it is?

Rita - Let me think, okay, Oh! I forgot, its aunty's isn't it?

Tim - Absolutely, and brother said to bring some Australian presnt for her from here.

Rita - Okay, so do you have any guess what she would like?

Tim - I remember well that she likes knitting and so I have decided I will buy Australian wool for her.

Notes: infinitive + पड़ना = strong and future compulsion

The use of पड़ना instead of होना gives a sense that the thing ‘has to be’ done and often carries the sense that this is against the will of the doer. On its own पड़ना means to lie, or fall, and it loses its separate sense in this construction (but note the similarity to English ‘It fell to him to rule the kingdom’.

Compulsion in relation to the future is also spoken of using पड़ना.

Compulsion in relation to repeated habitual actions is spoken of with पड़ना.

It also makes it possible to distinguish between what you had to do, and actually did in the past, using पड़ना in the past perfective, and what you had to do, but did not do, using होना.

You find the पड़ना form of compulsion statement in the perfective with negative statements, but this often gives the sense that this was contrary to expectation.
