Notes: Locations

The following postpositions are useful when talking about locations.

के आगे front of in ‘in front of my house’; beyond as in ‘beyond [a distant location]’
के सामने opposite (i.e. as in ‘opposite my house’)
के पीछे behind
के ऊपर above
के नीचे below, beneath
की बग़ल में beside (lit. ‘in the flank of’)
से दूर far from (note मुझसे दूर  etc.)
के बीच में in the middle, in between
के बीचों बीच (में) in the centre, in the very middle of
की चारों तरफ़ all around, surrounding
के आस-पास near about (cf. के पास  near)

These post positions can also appear with their के or की as in गंगा किनारे पर on the shore of the Ganges रास्ते पार on the other side of the road.

के किनारे किनारे on the edge, shore or side of a river, road, etc.
के पार पार on the other side of, beyond, across

All these words are also found without the के or की  and mostly function as adjectives or adverbs as in:

Note that for in you can use either में (from Sanskrit मध्य) or के अंदर (from Persian) and the difference in usage is not clear cut generally के अंदर gives more of a suggestion of within, rather than in, something. Due to this you will not normally find के अंदर in contexts like:
